Pebble Beach Residence
Within a protected grove of Monterey cypress a new vacation home was surgically sited on an existing house foundation and the surrounding landscape was restored with local genetically sourced native plants. Because many animals also consider this site their home, the design team considered plants and animals as clients for the project and included cypress germination and cypress conservation areas as well as native plant restoration of the coastal bluff scrub habitat adjacent to the marine sanctuary. A team of experts collaborated to find harmonies between construction and ecology. The final design was implemented through erasure as well as building to capture the sublime qualities of the landscape.
